울산 남구 달동 김동석
내겐 두 살 터울의 이종사촌 형이 있다. 작은이모네 집이 우리 집과 매우 가까워 중고등학교 시절 가끔 놀러 가곤 했다. 어느 날 형이 자신의 좌우명은 “돈 안 드는 일에 인색하지 말라”라며 말한 적이 있다. 그 말이 다소 생뚱맞기도 해서 내심 동의하기는 어려웠다.
그런데 내가 육십이 넘어 살다 보니, 형의 좌우명을 그냥 지나치기에는 무언가 숨겨진 교훈이 있음을 문득문득 깨닫곤 한다. 돈 드는 일에는 나를 포함해 대부분 사람들이 어느 정도 인색할 수밖에 없다. 반대로 ‘감사합니다’, ‘미안합니다’, ‘안녕하세요’와 같은 인사말은 돈이 전혀 안 드는 일임에도 인색한 경우가 많다.
인사말은 포함해 가족이나 친구, 동료, 이웃에 대한 칭찬이나 격려의 말, 사랑의 표현 등 우리 일상생활에서 돈 안 드는 일이 수두룩하게 많지만, 그것을 실천하는 것은 매우 어렵게 느끼는 경우가 대부분이다. 지금 그 형은 미국으로 이민을 가 자주 볼 수 없지만, 형이 말한 좌우명은 50여 년이 지난 지금도 내게 여전히 살아 숨 쉬고 있다.
홀로 계신 어머니께 이틀에 한 번은 전화하기, 아파트 엘리베이터에서 만나는 이웃에게 먼저 인사하기, 국경일 태극기 달기 등 앞으로 돈 안 드는 일에 인색한 일이 없기를 오늘도 다짐해 본다. 오늘따라 그 형이 몹시 그립다. 지병으로 몸이 편찮으시다는데 전화를 한 지도 벌써 한 달이 지났다. 안부 인사도 하고 부족하지만 형의 좌우명을 지금껏 내 나름대로 열심히 실천하고 있다는 말도 전할 겸 오랜만에 전화 한번 해봐야겠다.
